In this Q&A, a community shares his first-hand account of how the Kasigau REDD+ Project has transformed lives in his home region. In the face of global criticism, he saw local community member voices being ignored, which inspired him to produce a community-led film series documenting the project’s real impacts, from education and healthcare to forest protection.

Wildlife Works Reading Club, known locally as Carbon School part of the broader community engagement strategy of the Gerbang Barito REDD+ Project. By introducing environmental themes early, the program invests in future stewards of village forests. It strengthens learning spaces that belong to the community and grow with it.

The Gerbang Barito REDD+ project has started a “Roots and Words” writing competition and series of workshops to create an inclusive space for community members to document their lived experiences, customary knowledge, and their people’s relationships with nature. Through this initiative, community members have gained confidence and a deepened sense of responsibility over their REDD+ project.

In rural Indonesia, where access to education is limited, a reading club becomes a place of hope. Guided by volunteer teacher Ibu Husna, children learn, play, and grow their love for nature with support from the Wildlife Works Gerbang Barito REDD+ Project.

With funding from the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project, Jennifer Mwandoe is achieving her dream of attending university.

By Jane Okoth If you wanted a glimpse into the Kenyan educational crisis in the early 90s, there is no better place to look than in the rural areas. During those times, there was unequal access to education, with less development in terms of infrastructure, with schools being few and understaffed. Thousands of students as old as ten did not have access to school because it was either not affordable for their guardians, or not made accessible for relevant stakeholders. Julius
