Do you remember the first moment you felt in awe of nature as a kid?

Curiosity and love for nature - biophilia - is the powerful driving force for conservation we most arguably need amidst the current biodiversity crisis. In his 1984 book Biophilia E.O. Wilson wrote, “our existence depends on this propensity, our spirit is woven from it and hope rises on its currents.”

In her book What if We Get it Right? biologist Ayana Johnson argues that this feeling of awe is key to maintaining a proper respect for the millions of non-human species who call this planet home. Today, more than 1 million species are at risk of extinction, and the loss rate is far greater than natural extinction rates due to human-caused threats of habitat loss, pollution, overexploitation, and climate change. Solutions for the biodiversity crisis start with ourselves, and rekindling our own sense of biophilia.

At the ASATRIZY REDD+ Project in the Colombian Amazon, community member Felix Ferrer plays a pivatol role in monitoring the biodiveristy of the area. "My community is surrounded by nature, and besides that, we subsist and live from it. Without it, we are nothing, we cannot live without it. We did the monitoring to make the new generation aware that these species are our natural wealth." In this blog, learn more about community-based biodiversity monitoring and Felix's story.
