Did you know?
Wildlife Works selected Rukinga as a sanctuary site because it opens a key migration corridor for the endangered elephants of the region. Living in complex, matriarchal societies, these magnificent creatures show extreme gentleness towards each other, but have awesome power when threatened or frightened. They are the largest land mammal, and can weigh up to 13,000 pounds. Sometimes called the architects of the savannah, elephants perform many critical functions that keep the bush habitat in a healthy state for other species. Strictly herbivores, elephants have no natural predators. However, most of the conflict between the wildlife on Rukinga and the local communities we work with revolves around elephants, who have been using this land for thousands of years, and refuse to recognize the arrival of farms as good reason to change old habits.
Your Purchase Matters
Every
time you buy a Wildlife Works product, you help us build a
brighter future for endangered wildlife and their habitats.
It's called Consumer Powered
Conservationsm - and you make it work.
There are two key issues facing the world's wildlife today:
- Destruction of habitat by humans, and
- Poaching by poor, hungry rural people for money or meat.
Wildlife Works is addressing both of these issues
head on. We use the proceeds from your purchases
to protect wildlife by placing large areas of
wilderness under conservation, like we did with our Rukinga
Sanctuary in Kenya. Of equal importance, we
provide jobs for the people who share their land and resources
with wildlife, so they can feed their families and send
their children to school without destroying animals and their
habitats.
Remember, Consumer Powered
Conservationsm only works because of you,
and it works even better when more people get involved. So,
help spread the word! |
